Cracking is one of the major distresses of asphalt pavement, affecting its service life. To address the cracking problem of asphalt concrete and enhance the durability of asphalt pavement, this presentation introduces the background, preparation, and performance of a novel type of electrically conductive asphalt concrete (ECAC) based on nano-carbon coating of aggregate. Compared with conventional conductive asphalt-based ECAC, this novel ECAC not only provides better mechanical and self-healing performance, but also is more cost-effective, thus showing high potential for practical application. It is also promising for many other smart pavement applications, such as traffic monitoring, weight in motion, and pavement health self-monitoring.
