Yu Xiong: "Multiscale Sensing and Computational Simulations for Bridge Scour"

On November 6th, Professor Yu Xiong from Case Western Reserve University was invited by Institute of Geotech Engineering to give a report titled "Multiscale Sensing and Computational Simulations for Bridge Scour". The meeting was hosted by Professor Liu Songyu. 

Dr Yu Xiong is a professor at Department of Civil Engineering, Case Western Reserve University, mainly researching areas in geo-engineering, geomaterials, mutiphisics processes, innovative sensors, intelligent systems and sustainable and multifunctional materials. His research emphasizes the use of interdisciplinary approaches to advance the intelligent and durability of geosystem, civil infrastructure, energy and environmental systems. He is a recipient of a NSF CAREER award in 2009. He is a member of U.S. delegates for academic exchanges with China, Japan, Germany, and UK. He serves on the editorial board of 4 journals. He is also the chair of the Geo-Institute Engineering Geology and Site Characterization committee, which received the Geo-Institute Technical Committee of the Year award in 2014. 

In the report, Dr Yu Xiong described in detail the process of soil erosion around bridge foundation from aspects of computational simulations and multiscale sensing, establishing the framework of bridge scour depth prediction and risk control in bridge failure. The attending teachers and students had a heated discussion with Dr Yu Xiong, and were greatly interested in the brand new academic thoughts and tech ideology in the report, especially in fields of innovative sensing and multi-disciplinary application.
